Introduction

Any injury or surgical procedure that breaches the skin will cause a scar. Problems with scarring arise when there is a problem with the healing of the wound, or the wound is aligned across a joint or in an aesthetically sensitive place, or if a person has a specific scarring disorder. Overgrown, hypertrophic or keloid scars can be unsightly, and contracted scars can limit function and distort surrounding tissues.
