Introduction

Most problematic scars will be improved with a variety of non-surgical treatments. Scar massage in the early stage can soften and modify a hard, lumpy scar. Hand therapy or physiotherapy can improve the function of contractures around joints. Silicone patches and compression garments can cause a gradual improvement in more hypertrophic or extensive scars.

Surgery is indicated to release tight contractures or to resurface large areas of scar resistant to conservate measures. This is sometimes done in combination with steroid injection or adjuvant radiotherapy for very problematic scars.
